Visiting Instructor Policies

Paradise Tango enjoys hosting visiting Argentine Tango instructors in Honolulu, Hawaii. This document outlines the expectations of both the Visiting Teachers and Paradise Tango with regards to travel, financial and other considerations.

Dates

Generally, Paradise Tango host only 3-4 Visiting Couples per year with 2-3 months in between each visiting couple. This spreads out the special workshops and maximizes attendance while allowing local dancers to save up for workshops and private lessons. We are able most easily host Visiting Instructors on the SECOND, FOURTH or FIFTH WEEKEND of each month (1st and 3rd weekends have limited studio availability for private lessons due other other regularly scheduled events).

  • Paradise Tango needs to know the desired dates for a visit including arrival, departure, and the number of days during which tango related activities will take place. We understand that Hawaii is a beautiful location to visit and fully support Visiting Instructors taking time to enjoy our beautiful island home.

Payment and Fees

  • Paradise Tango splits profits from workshops 70% to the Visiting Instructor and 30% to Paradise Tango. Workshop tickets will besold via Eventbrite (online) tickets and via in-studio tickets (cash, credit card, or check to Paradise Tango).
  • Private Lessons require only the $20 floor fee, Visiting Instructors keep everything else. Private Lessons can be paid directly to the Visiting Instructors in cash or through the studio via (cash, credit card or check to Paradise Tango).
  • Payment is made via Check at the completion of the visit, unless otherwise agreed, with an accompanying invoice listing all profits from workshops, privates (paid for via Paradise Tango), and performances showing the breakdown for both Paradise Tango and the Visiting Instructors.

As Hosts - PARADISE TANGO Provides:

  • FREE housing at our house close to downtown Honolulu and the studio. Our home is your home. Including full access to kitchen, food, and outdoor activity supplies such beach towels, snorkel gear, boogie boards and inflatable Kayak.
  • FREE car for driving to and from lessons and to fun island activities (when available, e.g. if there we have car trouble)..
  • Scheduling of local activities if desired (such as parasailing, surfing lessons, hiking, snorkeling, etc.)

TRAVEL - As a small dance studio with a large overhead Paradise Tango is UNABLE to provide:

  • Coverage of Flights to and from Honolulu or to other islands such as the Big Island or Maui.

ADVERTISING

  • Advertising in local media via Press Releases of Visiting Instructor visits, online advertising through Facebook, Eventbrite, Meet-Up, HNLNow, Honolulu Magazine, Hawaii.com events, and more.
  • Online ticket sales for workshops through Eventbrite to maximize exposure and sales.
  • Advertising at other tango venues in Honolulu (milongas, practicas and classes)
  • Word of mouth to students and fellow tango community members.

As Guests VISITING INSTRUCTORS are expected to:

TRAVEL - Scheduling your Visit and Choosing Dates:

  • Visiting Instructors should ideally contact Paradise Tango no later than 2 months prior to their desired visit.
  • Dates should be confirmed at least 1 month in advance to facilitate advertising.
  • Typical Visits are 5-7 days and cover 1 weekend (Saturday and Sunday) with an arrival on Tuesday or Wednesday and departure on Monday or Tuesday.
  • Visits longer than 1 weekend (back to back weekends) are exceptional and need to be planned with 6 months’ notice to allow for the community to prepare/save for extra workshops.

ADVERTISING

  • Visiting Instructors need to provide high resolution images to use in advertising campaigns. Professional photographs work best with plain white background, black and grey also work but are more expensive to print. Several different photos (poses, outfits) are recommended so multiple advertisements can be produced.

WORKSHOPS

  • Paradise Tango needs to know a variety of information for planning workshops. Typical 1 weekend visits have 4-6 workshops (2-3 each day) depending on workshop length.  Visiting Instructor workshops are generally 1-1.5 hours long.
  • Paradise Tango needs a list of the workshop titles and descriptions no later than 1 month before the Visiting Instructors visit to allow time for marketing and student registration.  Once workshop information is known, send a Title and Description to Paradise Tango. Fun titles and descriptions encourage folks to register. See Example Below:

Workshop 1 Title: Milonga Musicality
Workshop 1 Description: How to dance a full tanda without dying of exhaustion

  • Paradise Tango can offer advice regarding topics and level of classes offered.
  • Paradise Tango has students of all levels, from folks who have only just begun their tango journey to folks who have been dancing for many years and travel to festivals and Argentina.  We usually like to have a nice spread of general traditional salon tango topics and either a milonga or vals class as well. Paradise Tango students enjoy things like off-axis work (volcadas and colgadas) and ganchos, enganches and wraps.  We have also had lots of interest in musicality workshops.  We usually recommend some workshops/topics be appropriate for beginners and others be geared toward intermediate/advanced dancers.
  • Paradise Tango needs to know the maximum and/or minimum number of students needed for each workshop (e.g. Paradise Tango has had classes limited to 10 couples that must be gender balanced, and in other cases classes with as many folks as possible and not forced to be gender balanced). Please let us know your preferences.  Note, our studio can comfortably fit 25 couples, tough we have had up to 100 people for social events such as milongas/practicas.  Please specify the maximum and minimum number of students and if you would like Paradise Tango to limit workshops based on keeping them gender balanced.
  • Paradise Tango needs to know what Visiting Instructors would like to charge for workshops.  Paradise Tango generally offers discounts for multiple classes (e.g. $25 for one class, 2 for $45, 3 for $65 etc.).

PRIVATE LESSONS

  • Paradise Tango is an ideal location to teach private lessons. Since we have our own studio, Visiting Instructors can teach lessons throughout the day and whenever the studio is not already reserved for other classes.  Visiting Instructors only need to pay the $20/hour floor fee (covers electricity for AC, lights fans, water usage, and supplies) and can set the price of their private lessons.  Private lessons are usually scheduled in 1 hour increments.  Visiting Instructors have the option to have Paradise Tango schedule private lessons for them (usually on days when there are workshops) and/or schedule their lessons independently.

PERFORMANCES and DEMONSTRATIONS

  • Paradise Tango loves to have Visiting Instructors perform at events at Paradise Tango but can also organize other performance opportunities. We do encourage performances at certain events (or Friday Milonga or Wine and Tango for example) to advertise and showcase Visiting Instructors to boost interest in the workshops and privates.
  • Paradise Tango needs to know if you charge a fee for performances and what type of performances you are willing and able to give including theatrical performances, simple improvisational demos, etc.  Based on the fees for performances we can best match your performances and demos with events going on in Honolulu. Please note that some events may not be able to afford performances or demos based on the requested fees.
